I may be wrong, but I thought Phil (old fart) had done this a few years ago. You may want to consider having access to a spare hood, just in case....

That's why the scoop is already there.. To cover the hole up, even if it don't work right away.

Have you considered that the air sucks into the normal Ranger from somewhere near the right front fender?

A guy on RPS did that once, and maybe posted it here too. It was a lot of work and I'm not sure there was much benefit to it. You take air in at the center of the engine, there is limited clearance over the engine, and you either have to duct it all the way to inside the fender or fab up something that would match up to the intake when you closed the hood.

Keep in mind you have a composite hood too. I'm not sure how well those cut without splitting or chipping.

Why not snag an 04 hood? It will leave a gap over your grill.. from there you can do duct work and have a forced-air type of setup.

100% stock!

...and then let me know how it works out. I've talked to Dan on and off for several years about this idea for my truck. Put in an '03 grill and support structure but leave the '04 hood. I think it might work but I've never had the time to try. Ducting could be interesting as the area of the passenger side headlight might get busy and one would need to come up with a way to keep large amounts of water out of the system.

If you happen to be the "lab rat" be sure to keep us posted.

Which Dan? Bumpincarstereo guy?

Anyway, I plan on having a regular old xl/xlt hood on very soon. No lab-ratting for me.

When I first picked up my '04 there were two little details I didn't care for all that much. The first was the turn signal lever. Because of the change to the steering wheel, they put a funny little bend in the lever and it didn't fall to hand the way I was used to. It just didn't seem to be in the right place. But I got over it.

The next issue was the grill. On the '03 there is pretty much a straight line across the grill at the top of the headlights/bottom edge of the hood. The '04 and later trucks have a bump up in the center. I don't personally care for it.

So, probably after too many beers, I got to wondering what it would look like if I put an '03 grill (which I happen to think is the way a Ranger grill should look) on my truck. It would leave a wide gap between the top of the grill and the bottom front edge of the hood right up front. After solving the various mechanical problems with such an idea one would need to "simply" duct the air from the hole to the intake entry where the snorkel used to be.

I never Photoshopped it. So I can't be sure if I'd like the way it would look in real life. But it was a thought.

For you it would seem a bit easier as you don't need to change out the grill. All you need is the hood. The ideal situation would be having a friend with a black '04 or later truck. Then you would need a rain free day and plenty of beer and you could mock it up by swapping hoods and see what it looks like.

A functional hood scoop on a Ranger is a waste of time & money. No real benefit is realized.

DeepSouth... did you do this yet ?
Hood scoops unless plumbed to the air intake are for looks only but they do look good.
When cutting the hole (if not already done) first make sure to separate the frame work from the upper layer of teh hood then try a nibbler; it will cut one layer at a time.
Luck pics pls
